Specialty coffee in Berlin, roasted in Friedrichshain.
If you are looking for specialty coffee in Berlin, this is how we work. At Boxhagener Straße 82 in Berlin-Friedrichshain, we roast whole-bean coffee for espresso and filter and serve it in our roastery café. Here is how a coffee gets from a green sample to your cup.
Six coffees from Colombia.
All six of our coffees come from Colombia. Five are grown by Café Granja La Esperanza in Valle del Cauca: Java, Pacamara, Mandela, La Esperanza and Geisha. Mandela is a variety the producer bred itself. Decaf Colombia is sourced separately. We work with green coffee importers who have personal connections to producers, so every coffee can be traced to its farm.
Tested before we buy.
New green coffees reach us as samples. We roast them on our sample roasters, an IKAWA PRO100 and a PROBAT sample roaster, and cup them before we decide which coffees to buy. Before a coffee goes into the roaster, we check its moisture content, water activity, density, screen size and defects.
Roasted and tasted, batch by batch.
We roast on a PROBAT Probatone 12, gently, to bring out the subtle nuances of each coffee. Roasting software records the temperature curve of every batch, and a roast analyser measures how light or dark each roast is. Colour alone does not decide taste, so we cup every roast as well. For formal assessments, we use the Specialty Coffee Association’s Coffee Value Assessment.
Packed fresh.
We pack each coffee within a day of roasting, in bags with a one-way valve, and send it out as fresh as possible. It rests on its way to you and once it arrives. In our cafés, every coffee rests for at least seven days after roasting before it is ground.
Where to taste it.
Our roastery café at Boxhagener Straße 82 and our café at Voigtstraße 35 are open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, for breakfast, brunch and our coffee. You can also order our coffees online, for delivery or for pickup at Boxhagener Straße 82.
Learn with us.
